If you just experienced a few rattles from under the car hood, or your car is starting to sound like it’s running out of gas because of a lack in power, it’s not unusual. It could be a sign of an exhaust leak.
The following are the most common signs your exhaust is leaking:
Rattling: A clunking noise when driving over bumps can be a clue to a bad exhaust system.
Thumping: If the car is making a dull thumping sound from the muffler, inspect the exhaust.
The sound of running out of gas: Another sign your exhaust is leaking is the sound of a car running out of gas.
The smell of exhaust: When the exhaust is leaking, there will be an unpleasant odor coming from the engine bay.
Car will idle low: The idle speed on your car can fluctuate greatly. If your car idles at a certain speed, check to see if it remains at that same speed when you drive at a higher speed. If not, your car may be experiencing exhaust issues.
